ADHD Treatments

These are alternatives to medication which may assist the child with ADHD:

  • Nutritional supplements rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, Vitamin B6, Zinc, Magnesium

  • Behavioural modification strategies

  • Play therapy/ therapy

  • Inform the teacher as she can then implement strategies at school which will help your child

  • Other alternative therapies can include Homeopathic remedies (our Homeopathic Doctor, Dr Padayachee can advise further), Chiropractic treatments and other movement therapies. Our Educational Psychologist ia available to provide more information.

There are also strategies which parents can implement in the home:

  • Setting basic rules for the child to follow (structure in the home is very important)

  • A reward system for desirable behaviour and teach your child deficient skills

  • Punishment for unsuitable behaviour: remember that punishment must always suit the crime

  • Using clear and concise instructions and usually only giving one instruction at a time

  • Helping your child with planning and organising and rehearse possible scenarios

  • Use of calming music

  • Encourage your child to use relaxation or calming techniques

  • Use of a calming bedtime routine

  • Encourage your child to participate in sport and physical exercise

  • If medication is prescribed by a specialist, monitor its effectiveness and keep check-up appointments

  • Foods to avoid:

  • Artificial ingredients( like sweeteners , colourants and flavourants), MSG, preservatives and at first fruit and vegetables containing high levels of salicylates (such as berries, currants, dried fruits, apricots, pineapple, courgettes, tomatoes, peppers)

  • Restricting the amount of refined carbohydrates (white flour, white rice and especially white sugar).

  • Replacing refined carbohydrates with protein and complex carbohydrates such as brown rice, whole grains and vegetables.

  • Dairy products

  • Yellow foods

  • Instant foods or junk foods

  • Processed meat

  • Fried food

  • Rather:

  • Breakfast should have 60% protein content

  • Protein supplements with low carbohydrate content

  • Plenty of vegetables and fruit (but only those low in salicylate content such as paw-paw, banana, golden delicious apples, brussel sprouts, red cabbage, cauliflower, green beans, green peas, fresh asparagus, white potatoes with skin and onions)

  • A full list of vegetables and fruit can be downloaded from:

What you need to know about medication such as Ritalin and Concerta:

Common side effects can include: loss of appetite, abdominal pain, weight-loss if long-term. inability to fall or stay asleep and an abnormally fast heartbeat.

Ensure the neurologist/ paediatrician monitors the dosage of the medication very carefully. Medication may be slow-release or multiple dosages depending on the severity of the symptoms and reaction of the child to the medication.
