Mediation is a voluntary process in which parties meet with a neutral person (Mediator) to reach agreements regarding an issue. It is considered as an alternative to litigation and is often a more cost-effective solution.
Divorce mediation involves parents of a child, or children, who meet together with a Mediator to make arrangements for the future and immediate well-being of the child or children concerned. The goal is to prepare a settlement agreement or parenting plan which can be made an order of the court (a legally binding document). As parties are directly involved in decision-making processes, they have more control over the outcomes. The process also tends to span a shorter time than litigation procedures, and is often viewed as a less stressful approach. Divorce mediation is sometimes referred to as “family mediation”.
